Below is the recording setup we have started with. The Tascam DR-05X handheld recorder set to 16 bit, 44.1k WAV format (typical CD quality). The line-out going from the Teac TN-300 turntable is going straight into the Tascam and the blue output from the Tascam is going back to the speaker so we can hear what we are recording. Manual recording level is set to 5 to avoid saturation and the external battery bank allows for many hours of rechargeable recording time. We already had all of these components so we started here and with a good quality LP the quality of this recording setup is very good. Post processing we are using Audacity to balance the channels and normalize the output and if necessary use WaveCorrector to remove pops and cracks. Recapping: With the recapping kit for the Carver TFM-6C amp, we focussed on replacing the large 6800 uF capacitors. Although holding acceptable values, we saw corrosion underneath so it was good time to remove them before they could leak and cause damage. Idle Current Adjustment: After replacing the capacitors, we adjusted the idle current for each channel. We initially measured it to be nearly 2x the specified value for this amp. Each channel was initially reading 9 mV across the reference resistors but we set back to the desired factory setting of 5 mV using the adjustable onboard potentiometers. It could be our imagination but the unit seems to sound a little clearer at the low end and maybe even less distortion at the high end. But even if sound quality improvement is subtle this circa 1990s Carver amp is future proofed from major capacitor leaking for years to come. Below are some before and after photos.
