In 1501, a 26 year old Michelangelo convinced church overseers to allow him to work on a massive 17ft high block of scrap marble that had been abandoned by two other sculptors 25 years earlier due to certain imperfections found while working with it. Michelangelo transformed it into a 8.5 ton masterpiece depicting the Biblical David.
