Prairie: Sept. 20th

There is not as much bird activity in the evenings it seems.  There was one sparrow though who was out for a song.  This image was taken from about 40 feet out at 300mm with the D70.  The D70 paired with the 300mm works so well for most of the shots.  It's a 17 year old camera as of this photo with a shutter speed range of 30s-1/8000s (faster than many cameras today) which is very helpful to capture some of the fastest wings out there.  The prairie is just the perfect setting for bird photography.   Singing Sparrow A great time to capture a few photos of the flowers which you see at lot around the prairie.  The colors are always so vibrant.  There is an old saying that if you called someone a Daisy then in one context that could mean obviously that they were pleasing to the eyes but the other context meant since the Daisy lasted so long in flower vases after they had been cut that they were strong and withstanding.  Most of the flowers I've seen in the prairie remind me of th

Goldfinch with the D70

I think this was my best image from the Prairie yesterday.  A goldfinch who was not shy allowed me to get close enough.  Unlike the butterflies and hummingbirds, most of the bird species at the prairie are very skittish and it's challenging to get close enough, let alone find a good angle and get the camera focused and the shot in time.  I have missed many great shots because nature is just too fast most of the time.   Because of the sharpness and low light performance, the Nikon D70 was again my go to camera paired with the Nikon AF 70-300mm.  The first image is the original and I was fortunate to get this shot on an exposed set of branches which set the bird apart from the background and with a great profile and angle.  Most of the time the birds are hiding in dense bushes and darting behind the leaves making it difficult to photograph.  The second image is the same only cropped in to focus more on the bird.  I am impressed with the sharpness, color and image quality I am getti

Butterfly with the Nikon D70

Captured this yesterday morning at the Butler Prairie with the "vintage" Nikon D70.  The sharp and low noise images it takes with its CCD sensor (even in low light) more than makes up for the relatively small 6 MP image resolution by today's standards.  Just compose well, limit cropping and the results are amazing.  This was top of the line pro camera back in 2004  but can be purchased today in excellent used condition for under  $70 .  Still an amazing competitive camera today. Of all the wildlife at the Butler Prairie, it's the fearless butterfly who is not shy about posing. Butterfly:  Nikon D70 (1/500,f5.6,1600)
